The RM200/month I'm still paying for a closed shop
The same boss who signs RM100k cheques without blinking would interrogate a RM250 expense.
Something puzzled me about successful entrepreneurs.
The same boss who signs RM100k cheques without blinking would interrogate a RM250 expense.
"What's this RM250 for ah?"
Made no sense to me. Until I spotted the pattern.
You might think it's because RM100k goes into assets or investments with returns. That's partially true.
The real reason, however is that they're not measuring the amount. They're measuring the commitment.
That RM100k? One-time payment. Done.
That RM250? Locked in monthly for 5 years. RM15,000 total.
But more importantly - you can't escape.
Another example:
"Spend RM50k on Facebook ads? Approved!"
"RM500/month software subscription? Let me think..."
Why?
Ad spend fails? Stop immediately. Lesson learned, move on. Software subscription? Trapped in contract whether you use it or not.
Smart entrepreneurs learned something most haven't:
Recurring expenses are business killers.
Not because of the amount. Because of the handcuffs.
Markets change. Strategies pivot. Businesses evolve.
But that RM500/month subscription? Still there. That 3-year service contract? Still paying. That software you stopped using? Credit card still kena charged.
Death by a thousand recurring cuts.
We can't avoid investing money to grow business. That's given.
But smart money asks: "Can I stop this tomorrow if needed?"
If answer is no, they run.
Because flexibility is survival in business.
Being locked into expenses when revenue drops? That's how businesses die.
Being able to cut costs instantly when needed? That's how businesses survive downturns.
Want a business model with zero recurring costs?
No contracts. No subscriptions. No monthly minimums.
Your costs go up only when sales go up.
