The PM's announcement should scare you

The PM announced today:  

• RM100 cash handout for all adults

• RON95 down to RM1.99 per litre

• Toll hikes delayed

• Extra public holiday on 15 Sept

A lot of people very syok, making plans for the long Malaysia Day weekend. I was thinking, "are you kidding me?" Not because I hate free money.

But you calculate hor.
RM100 isn't a lot of money these days.
RM2.05 to RM1.99? That's RM3.00 saved per full tank.
Toll delay? Maybe saves you RM50 monthly if you commute far. And gives transport companies one less reason to naik harga.

And here's the real cost of these "goodies":  

• 1 full day of lost national productivity

• RM15 billion from our budget

That's RM15 billion that could have gone to pay our doctors, pay our teachers. Instead, we get pocket money and another day to escape work.

And here's what hit me hardest:
If RM100 makes a significant difference in my life...
If I'm counting days till the next public holiday...
If I need government handouts to feel relief...
I'm living life wrong.

I'm not allergic to money. Free RM100? Take la.
I'm not workaholic either. Need to spend time with my kids also.
But this announcement served as my wake-up call.

I refuse to build a life where:  

• My spending depends on government mercy

• My happiness depends on gazetted holidays

• My relief comes from escaping work

I want to build a life where:  

• RM100 is nice but changes nothing

• Work is so fulfilling I forget what day it is

• I take breaks on MY terms, not Parliament's

Think about it.
The person celebrating RM100... Still struggling next month.
The person desperate for public holidays... Still hating 250 other days.
The person depending on petrol subsidies... Still one policy change from disaster.
Living paycheck to paycheck. Holiday to holiday. Handout to handout.

Not for me. That's why I'm relentlessly building away from that.
